#WHY DO I NEED A COMPASS ON MY BOAT?

This may seem like a silly question or it may seem like something you never thought of.  Well in any case, here it goes. If you go offshore, a compass is a simple tool that can get you home safely.  Even if that expensive GPS stops working, the compass will point North.  With that info, you should be on your way home.

# What do I need on my boat?

You might say, I'm a strong swimmer - not if you get knocked out as you fall overboard.  I like to bring everyone back that I took out with me in the same condition they left.  A yellow polypropylene line that can be attached to a retrieval float is a good idea as well.  Yellow is easy to see and polypropylene floats so it can be seen easily.  That's it for today.  Keep everyone safe so they can tell everyone what a good time they had, By the way, we sell the rope.

# NYLON LINE OR POLYESTER LINE

Hi - You may have wondered whether or not nylon or polyester line is better.  Well, they are both great when used for the purposes they are intended.  Nylon is the strongest traditional line.  I recommend double braid nylon because it is a bit stronger than 3 strand and it does not tangle.  Because it stretches, it is ideal for dock lines, anchor lines and mooring pendants.  The stretch is great, because it allows the line to withstand substantial stress loads without worrying about it breaking.  Polyester line is great for sailboat running rigging because it does not stretch easily so your sails stay where you set them until you change the settings.  Again, double braid is the easier and stronger line to use.  So, for sailboat halyards and sheets on your boat, I recommend polyester.

HOW LONG SHOULD MY HALYARDS BE?

Hi - How long should my halyards be - It reminds me of what Abraham Lincoln said when he was asked how long a man's legs should be - He replied - " I think a man's legs should be long enough to reach the ground"  -   If you need new halyards and you have a set of halyards that you are happy with, simply measure the length and diameter and you got it.  We can make a set up for you from premium double braid polyester which has super low stretch characteristics.  If you are missing a halyard, let us know the exact boat you have and we will do the research and let you know what the manufacturer recommends be happy to make up a set. The research is FREE

#WISHIN' SPRING WERE HERE

Hi - I live in North western NJ and we still have snow on the ground and on the tarp on my sailboat.
I just can't wait for the snow to be gone so I can start to get my boat ready for the season.  There's a picture that hangs over my desk, a print that is at least 40 years old actually of a boat that looks strikingly like mine. It doesn't make it any easier to wait, but it brings to mind the years of seasons I have spent in the waters of Tom's river and Barnegatt bay. Soon spring will be here and I'll be back on the water.  I'm like a little kid. I can't wait.

All the best, John

#CHECK YOUR LINES

Hi - John here - There are lots of reasons to check your lines - Lets start with those of you who just bought a boat - Did the boat come with the lines you need to be safe and operational. First, you want to be sure you have the right size lines. If you bought a new boat, it may have come with lines - Do some research to be sure they are the right size and nice quality. If you like, we can help you with this, just email us john@mastermarinelines.net - If  it did not come with lines, email us with info as to where you will be keeping your boat and the size and type of boat it is - I'll be happy to help you with this and there is no charge.  If you bought a used boat with lines and they are five or more years old, they should be replaced because they have half or less than their original strength.  If you don't have lines, email us for help.  If you have frayed lines, be safe, replace them.  Hopefully, this has been some help.  I'm sure I have not answered all your questions - EMAIL ME - Our website has quite a lot of info -Check it out - www.mastermarinelines.net - If you prefer to call, our number is (862) 268 1366 - All the best, John

#docking your boat, part 3, a short one

#docking your boat, part 2

Hi - After writing and publishing yesterday's post, I realized it's important to know how to get your boat to the dock or slip where it probably spends most of it;s life in the water. I felt bad about that, but there is always tomorrow, which in this case is today.  In a perfect world, there would be no wind, waves, currents or tides to interfere with your progress getting to the dock or into your slip. In our world, they all exist.  Taking them into account and dealing with them is a matter of practice. This may not seem like fun, but it's more fun than filling out insurance claims. Having at least one crew member to fend off a piling or boat with a boat pole is always good practice and being ready to pull away from the dock or slip if all else fails is a good idea. You want to come in slow enough to be able to drop a line on a piling or cleat, with enough speed to keep control of your boat.  Sounds easy, right?  Well, it will be after you practice, practice and practice some more. The hardest part is getting to know how to judge conditions and how your boat handles. Any questions, just email me at john@mastermarinelines.net and if you leave your phone number, we talk about any of your concerns.

#docking your boat

Hi - As promised, a simple explanation of what you need to dock your boat safely. You need four dock lines approximately 2/3 the length of your boat.  You also need two dock lines approximately the length of your of your boat. These are called spring lines and are more important in tidal waters where your boat rises and falls with the tides.  That's it, either four or six lines.  The best lines are made from premium nylon.  If you know what diameter you need, great. If not, check our dock lines page and there's a guide.  www,mastermarinelines.net or email me john@mastermarinelines.net or call me 862 268 1366.  You can pick colors, 3 strand nylon or double braid nylon and special lengths.
HOPE THIS HELPED
