The question sometimes comes up as to whether there is a difference between boat rope and ordinary rope. The answer is yes. The best answer I have ever heard is you won't find many mountain climbers buying their rope at a hardware store. There are many types of ropes out there for many different purposes. For your boat, stick with rope made for boats by a reputable source - like us

We are back from vacation, had a great time and are ready to help you with your rope needs. Did you know that the typical dock line loses half of its strength in five years? Hurricane season is here - Is there anything we can help with?

White nylon rope is about 10 % stronger than its colored counterparts. It's rarely mentioned because , well who knows why - That 10 % probably doesn't matter in most cases in the real world - I you are fastidious about this sort of thing, buy white or more up one size in diameter - Hope some of you found this helpful!

Commonsense may be the most important factor in selecting a dock line for your boat. If you have a small fishing boat ( a row boat ) that you trailer and are able to launch and retrieve in a few minutes which is used on small calm freshwater lakes, a length of inexpensive polypropylene line might serve you well.
If you have a 30 foot sailboat which is docked in tidal waters, nylon line is a necessity for safety and assurance that your boat is secure.
The best way to know you are buying good quality is to have a trusted source who is willing to answer your questions and provide not only good line, but good service as well.
At Master Marine Lines, we strive to do the right thing for our customers and our vendors.
Give us a try and get yourself the right rope for the right purpose - It comes with the quality and pride of being American made and great service.
Thanks, John

New England Ropes (vs) Custom Cordage
Do you like top quality double braid nylon rope for your dock lines, anchor lines, fender lines and so on. You probably know we only sell American marine rope. You probably know most of what we sell is made by New England ropes or Custom Cordage. You probably know New England Ropes is more expensive than Custom Cordage. So what's the difference and why do we sell both?
New England Ropes is known the world over and spends tons of research money developing state of the art products. We want these products to be available to you at low prices and frankly some folks just want a top quality name brand. New England Ropes is our first choice for this type of product.
Custom Cordage is the rope I use on my boat. They, much like Master Marine Lines are a small family owned business that prides itself on selling only the best. They craft their rope in Maine and the rope they manufacture and sell is every bit as good as New England Ropes. The price of their products is less because they spend no research money. They simply make the best money can buy.
Granted, they don't make every specialty product that New England Ropes makes, but if you need dock lines, anchor lines, fender lines, towing lines and you need custom work, they do top notch work in house.

HOW TO TERMINATE THE BITTER END OF YOUR LINE
There was a time when marine line (rope) was made of natural fiber. Whipping was and still is a perfectly good way to stop the cut end of the rope (the bitter end) from fraying and becoming useless as it unraveled.
Today, almost all rope is synthetic and can be heat sealed so that especially for the seasonal boater, whipping is not necessary. It's an extra step that lends no additional life to the rope. It simply adds an aesthetic touch to the terminal end of your line. The truth is the useful strength of your rope will probably be gone in five years or less and the heat seal will be intact.
So, should you whip the terminal end of your boats line - only if you like the way it looks!!
Should you consider replacing your line in about five year intervals if you use it regularly and it is exposed to UV rays even if it isn't frayed or dirty, probably so.
The above is food for thought. Boaters, like everyone have different opinions. I can tell you that the five year rule is based on actual tests done on dock lines. They were high quality American made dock lines. Give this some thought if you wish and certainly let me know what you think. Your friends at Master Marine Lines.

ROPE IS ROPE??????
It would be interesting to survey mountain climbers and find out how many of them buy their rope at hardware outlets. Yet I have seen more than one forum comment that basically said rope is rope. If one were to take 10 manufacturers 1/2 inch 3 strand nylon white rope brand new, some domestic and some imported and subject each of them to a legitimate break test, there's a good chance no two would be the same.
If you own a boat worth many thousand dollars, don't you think it's worth it to know the rope you use as dock line will keep your boat safe under most predictable conditions. I do. So the question is how do you know? PRICE - not necessarily - I would have to say that a cheap price on a marine rope you never heard of is likely a poor excuse for quality marine rope. Stay away from these.
Reputation can be very important with national and international companies. The vendors selling these ropes may sell the exact same rope at different price points, so do some shopping. Master marine lines tries to keep prices as low as possible because we are the new kids on the block. We are building a reputation as your rope experts with your needs our highest priority. If we use an American dealer you have never heard of, you can trust them. We have checked them out and we know they know what they are doing.
Lastly, rope does not last forever. Tests have shown that well used rope that is five years old has probably lost half of its strength. This is rope that looks good to us ( no substantial frays or damage). We encourage you to be the judge of when to replace the lines on your boat.
Please share your comments and questions with us. john@mastermarienlines.net, mastermarinelines.net, (862) 268 1366 and check out our web site. Watch for our upcoming new site which hopefully will be more pleasing. Thanks, John

WHY New England ropes? You know we sell only American made products. New England ropes makes the highest quality 3 strand nylon marine rope available. Don't take our word for it - "Practical Sailor" magazine accepts no advertisers and endorses this rope based on their tests as the best. Sure it costs a little more, but isn't your safety worth it - mastermarinelines.net

A custom line is simply a line that is not available as a packaged item from a manufacturer. It is usually a special color or length. Most of the time we can and we will give you an honest answer as to how long it will take to get it done. Just call us, (862) 268 1366, or email us john@mastermarinelines.net
